Dear all,
as you already know, I will have to cease from my position as the course director in a couple of
weeks. After the incredible experience I had in the past three years as the director of the M.Sc. in
Finance, it is impossible to summarize and share all my feelings in this moment. I would only
like to say to each of you two simple things.
1. Directing Clefin/Finance is one of the things in my career I have been most proud of. I have
spent three intense years putting all my efforts to make things better, even if I know that many
more things could have been done and some will certainly be managed by Laura Zanetti (who
will always have my total and unconditioned support) better than I did. The intensity of a number
of personal relationships that have emerged in these years has been for me an incredible reward
for the few things I have done. I sincerely admire the effort, passion and dedication that almost
all of you have put in your experience as Clefin/Finance graduate students. All the faculty and I
have always felt responsible for that, as we were trying to create the best program in Finance we
could imagine. But we all know that all our effort would have been worthless if we had not
found exceptional students and people as you are. The change in the direction of the program
will not be a problem at all, but rather an opportunity, exactly because the team of people in the
faculty who have been striving to increase the program visibility will remain the same.
2. I wish to each of you that you could always be able to go on pursuing your aims with the same
passion you have shown so far. The years of the M.Sc. in Finance have been and/or will be for
most of you a critical passage between university and the job market, as a part of a more general
crucial and unique stage in your life. There are two things that I have always said to myself first
– and those who know me better than others will understand why these ideas derive from my
profound beliefs – and that I wanted to share with you. The first one is that everybody should
fight for what she or he considers important, without just desiring it in a passive and static way.
This is true for your job, but for your life as a whole, in which you will be asked to take greater
and greater responsibility through time. The second one is that the value of each person does not
depend on the results she or he may achieve; it does not depend on whether she or he will work
in London, or on whether she will be paid a lot, or on whether she will have a very visible and
well-considered job. This is why everybody should remain humble during successes and
determined and confident during failures. You will unavoidably experience a mix of both during
your life, but they will make evident the kind of person you are and give always chance for
further change.
I have been lucky because my experience at Bocconi as a student has been an experience of
passion, intensity, hard work and friendship, and has helped me become the person I am now,
with all my limitations and with all my merits. Even if I will no longer be the director, I will
always be proud to witness your talent, curiosity and personal maturity grow and bloom here at
Bocconi and wherever you will be working in future years.
